
Jovan Bliznakovski, researcher at the Institute for Democracy SOCIETAS CIVILIS (IDSCS), participated on the international scientific conference “Strategies of Symbolic Nation-Building in South Eastern Europe”. The conference was held in Rijeka, Croatia in the period 08-10 May 2014 and was the final event of the three-year research project with the same tittle. More than 40 participants gave their presentations across 11 panels that focused on different aspects of nation-building and nationalism.

The famous historian Maria Todorova, author of “Imagining the Balkans”, gave the key note speech, while Pal Kolsto, Florian Bieber, Eric Gordi, Stefan Troebst, Dejan Djokic and other established scholars gave their presentations on issues related to nation-building and nationalism in South Eastern Europe. In the framework of the conference, the publication „Strategies of Symbolic Nation-Building in South Eastern Europe“, edited by Pal Kolsto, was promoted.
Jovan Bliznakovski participated with the presentation titled “Symbolic aspects of the resolution of the official language problem in Macedonia” in the framework of the panel “Language and Linguistic Identity”.
