{"id":33155,"date":"2026-05-19T10:07:50","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T10:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idscs.org.mk\/?p=33155"},"modified":"2026-05-22T09:23:49","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T09:23:49","slug":"parliament-watch-perceptions-parliament-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idscs.org.mk\/en\/2026\/05\/19\/parliament-watch-perceptions-parliament-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Parliament Watch: Citizens&#8217; Perceptions of the Work of the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia (2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; animation_duration=&#8221;1&#8243; animation_delay=&#8221;0&#8243;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizens rated the work of the Parliament with an average score of 2.7, marking a slight improvement compared to previous years, while still indicating a relatively low level of satisfaction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the key findings of the public opinion analysis \u201cParliament Watch: Citizens&#8217; Perceptions of the Work of the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia (2026)\u201c, published by the Institute for Democracy &#8220;Societas Civilis&#8221; \u2013 Skopje (IDSCS) within the framework of the Parliamentary Support Programme (PSP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysis presents citizens\u2019 perceptions of the work of the Parliament, its openness, oversight role, and the quality of parliamentary debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey was conducted between 27 February and 10 March 2026 through a field survey with 1,002 respondents across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key findings from the executive summary include:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Citizens rated the work of the Parliament with an average score of 2.7, marking a slight improvement compared to previous years, although overall satisfaction remains relatively low.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Citizens found the oversight hearing in the Standing Inquiry Committee for Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms regarding the tragedy in Kochani and the debate on the Draft Budget of the Republic of North Macedonia for 2026 to be particularly memorable, which indicates that these topics had the greatest public visibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Citizens continue to rely primarily on private television stations for information about the work of the Parliament, although the use of the internet and social media as sources of information is increasing, especially among younger generations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Citizens perceive that the Government has greater influence over the Parliament than the Parliament has effective oversight over the executive branch.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Respondents identified adopting high-quality laws, overseeing the Government, and monitoring the implementation of laws and policies as the Parliament\u2019s most important functions, while also believing these functions are fulfilled only with moderate success.\\<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> More than half of respondents believe the Parliament is insufficiently open to the public, while many citizens do not know who their MP is and have never contacted an MP.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The prevailing perception is that MPs primarily represent personal and party interests, while citizens\u2019 interests remain secondary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Citizens believe parliamentary debates are dominated by confrontation rather than cooperation, with degrading and derogatory speech frequently present.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is significant public support for forming cross-party groups in the Parliament, particularly on issues related to youth, anti-corruption, unemployment, and persons with disabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Read the report:<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/idscs.org.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/A4_ENG-TERENSKA_ANKETA_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parliament Watch: Citizens&#8217; Perceptions of the Work of the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia (2026)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This publication has been prepared within the framework of the Parliamentary Support Programme (PSP), a project of the Government of Switzerland under the auspices of the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia.
