Fear and prejudice towards people of Islamic faith are the biggest source of stigmatization for refugees and migrants among young people from eight European countries, four from the Western Balkans and four EU Member States (including Macedonia) who responded to an online survey on stigmatizing attitudes among young people.

Findings show that fear and prejudice among young people are increasing largely due to the intensification of national feelings and concerns over terrorism in the world. This attitude and feelings are more pronounced among young people living in rural areas than in urban areas. In doing so, contact with refugees reduces the level of Islamophobia and stigma of young people towards these people.

The research was conducted within the project “Empower for change of stigmatizing attitudes” cofinanced by the Erasmus + program of the European Union, implemented by the Center for Democratic Transition from Montenegro, with JumpIn – Italy, Proni – Center for Youth Development in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Central European Heritage – Hungary, Center for Protection and Assistance to Asylum Seekers – Serbia, EUFRAK-EuroConsults – Germany, Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” Skopje – Macedonia and the European Projects Association – Belgium.
