Report: Corruption in Macedonia is increasing, resistance to corruption decreasing

The corruption pressure from officials (requests to pay bribe or provide favors) and the involvement of citizens have increased compared to the research conducted in 2014. This implies an increase in administrative corruption. If in 2014 every fourth adult citizen was requested to pay bribe, in 2016 almost every third citizen had experienced such practices.

It can also be noted that the involvement increases more rapidly than the pressure itself, which may lead to an increase in the number of people who are susceptible to corruptive pressure, or to a decrease in resistance to corruption.

The institutions are inefficient in dealing with corruption. If we compare the level of people’s involvement in corruption and suppose that they bribed only once, then we talk about 480.540 violations. If we compare that with the sum of convicted persons in 2014, (14 for bribery and 193 for malfeasance), we arrive to a conclusion that 0.04% from the corruption cases end up with a verdict.

The susceptibility to corruption, or the preparedness for involvement in corruption in a hypothetical situation, is by 9% higher in the research conducted in 2016 compared to the one conducted in 2014.

This is a part of the results published by the Macedonian Center for International Cooperation, from a field survey conducted in the framework of the USAID anti-corruption program. IDSCS was a partner to MCIC in implementing the program.
